Where to listen:
Have you ever been working toward your goals and got so frustrated because it feels like you are trying your hardest and it is still not enough? I talked about this last year when I started to hit the burnout phase of trying to be disciplined. Between wanting to take my content creation more seriously, getting back on track with my health, and doing the more responsible aspects of life like applying for work I can do that is flexible enough that I can work on the other things.
Discipline without the right mindset can lead to burnout and I wanted to share the biggest mindset shift I’ve had which is: "consistency is construction". Whenever I start to get impatient with my life, that is what I repeat to myself.
Think about building a house - you can't just snap your fingers and have it appear fully constructed. It takes time, careful planning, and consistent effort. Each brick laid is progress, even if you can't see the final form yet.
The same applies to personal growth and achieving goals. Every small action, every day of staying consistent, is like laying another brick in the foundation of your future. Some days you might only lay one brick, other days you might lay several, but what matters is that you keep building.
When we view consistency as construction, we shift from expecting immediate results to understanding that we're building something meaningful. This perspective helps reduce the frustration of not seeing instant progress because we recognize that construction takes time.
Today is an example of a day where I can only lay a brick. The type of day where I had an idea but the execution wasn’t going as planned. I wanted to share this because I tend to overthink and overanalyze my life to a point where it doesn’t feel like I’m making progress because I’m so hyper-focused on specific measurements. The amount of views or likes or shares does not now make me a content creator.
It is the action of creation and there are so many ways for that behavior to be fulfilled. I am not always going to be happy with what I create because when you are so used to pressuring yourself, nothing will feel adequate to you. This mindset can be paralyzing, making us forget that even "imperfect" creations are still steps forward.
Just like in construction, not every brick will be laid perfectly, and not every day's work will look Instagram-worthy. But each effort, each attempt, each creation - whether it meets our high standards or not - is another brick in our foundation. When we focus too much on the aesthetics of each individual brick, we lose sight of the magnificent structure we're building.
Coming back to the idea that consistency is construction, it's important to remember that even on days when our work doesn't meet our expectations, we're still building. We're still showing up, still laying bricks, still making progress - and that's what truly matters in the end.
I hope you enjoyed this post and found it interesting. Episode Description:
In this episode, we are talking all about consistency. On the podcast, we already spoke about self-discipline, but consistency is a sub-topic that deserves an episode all on its own.
